A typical car air conditioning system is made up of several main components:

Compressor: This is the heart of the system. It pressurises the refrigerant gas, raising its temperature so it can release heat.

Condenser: Similar to a radiator, this unit lets the hot gas release heat and condense into a liquid.

Expansion Device: Either a thermal expansion valve (TXV) or an orifice tube reduces the pressure of the refrigerant, allowing it to expand and cool.

Evaporator: The liquid refrigerant flows into the evaporator, where it absorbs heat from the air inside your car. A blower fan pushes this cooled air back into the cabin.

Receiver-Drier / Accumulator: These parts remove moisture from the refrigerant and store it before it loops back to the compressor.

As your AC runs, it’s constantly cycling refrigerant, absorbing heat from inside the car and dumping it outside, which cools the interior.

The compressor is powered by the engine. When AC is switched on, the engine must work harder to drive the compressor, which means more fuel consumption.
